Chapter 13 A Day That Meant More Than Words

The project was in full swing. Everything was moving at full pace.

Mahi and Vedant had both arrived in Ladakh together.

Mahi stood in front of the investors, her posture confident, her voice steady.

“For the expansion of North Zone Security, both the surveillance grid and response control need to be strengthened in parallel. If we go for sector-wise deployment, the operational risk will stay minimal.”

Vedant stood to the side, quietly observing.

His attention wasn’t really on the screen… it was on her.

A short break was called during the meeting.

Everyone seemed impressed with Mahi.

But the moment the room began to empty… she lost her balance slightly.

Vedant noticed instantly.

He moved toward her without hesitation.

“Are you okay?”

Mahi gave a faint smile. “Just a little dizzy… I’m fine.”

He didn’t argue.

He simply took her back to the hotel room.

Mahi sat down on the sofa, exhausted.

Vedant crouched down in front of her and carefully slipped off her heels.

“Who told you to wear these?” he said, his tone a mix of strictness and quiet concern.

Mahi smiled weakly. “The meeting was important… you should go.”

Vedant looked at her, steady and firm.

“You are more important to me.”

Silence settled between them.

A few moments later, he walked into the washroom and returned with a bowl of warm water.

Without a word, he placed her feet gently into it.

Mahi just watched him… quietly.

“Next time, sneakers for site visits,” he said. “That’s an order.”

She gave a soft nod. “Yes, sir.”

Night fell.

The room was dimly lit.

Mahi lay asleep on the bed.

Vedant stood at a distance, watching her for a moment… before stepping closer.

He gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

Then placed his hand against her forehead, checking her temperature.

“Still warm…” he murmured to himself.

After that, he moved to the sofa and lay down.

A few hours later — midnight.

Mahi opened her eyes.

The room felt heavy… suffocating.

She got up slowly and walked out to the terrace.

Cold wind brushed against her face.

Inside, Vedant stirred on the sofa.

He woke up, immediately noticing she wasn’t there.

Without wasting a second, he picked up her jacket and followed her outside.

He didn’t say anything.

He just draped the jacket over her shoulders.

“Mahi… you were sleeping. What are you doing here?”

She didn’t answer.

Vedant glanced at his watch.

12:00 AM.

His voice softened.

“Happy Birthday, Aaru.”

Mahi froze.

“How… did you know? You remembered?”

Vedant looked at her calmly.

“I don’t forget special dates.”

Just then, her phone rang.

It was a video call—Arvind and Alka.

“Happy Birthday, my child!” they said together, smiling warmly.

Mahi’s face lit up. “Thank you, Mom and Dad.”

The call ended.

Then Aryan called.

“Happy Birthday, my princess!”

“Thanks, bhai,” she replied.

Another call came—Vani.

“Happy Birthday, Aaru!”

“Thanks, Vani…”

And then… silence.

For the first time, she was away from her family on her birthday.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Vedant stepped closer.

“Hey… please don’t cry. I’m not very good at comforting people.”

Mahi looked at him… and without saying a word, she hugged him.

He didn’t hesitate.

He just let her.

And in that moment… time stood still.

7:30 AM.

Mahi opened her eyes in the hotel room.

As she sat up, her gaze fell on the side table.

A neatly wrapped bouquet of white lilies lay there.

Along with a small note.

She picked it up and read—

“Site visit at 9. Have your breakfast. – V”

A soft blush appeared on her face.

She checked her phone—

8 missed calls from vendors.

3 messages from the project head.

Getting ready quickly, she left for the site.

North Zone Security — Under Development Command Hub.

A high-security infrastructure project.

Large steel gates.

CCTV grids being installed.

Biometric access panels in testing phase.

Inside, massive LED walls lined the control room.

Mahi stood among the engineers, wearing a helmet, a tablet in her hand.

“We need to complete the heavy surveillance zones in Phase 1,” she said clearly.

“The north perimeter is the most vulnerable. Thermal sensors must be prioritized there.”

“Ma’am, the budget is stretching,” the project manager said.

Mahi looked straight at him.

“Security isn’t something we compromise on. Do it phase-wise if needed.”

Vedant stood at a distance, arms folded.

Watching. Approving.

An engineer showed the wiring layout.

“Where is the control room redundancy system?” Mahi asked.

Silence.

“Backup was planned for next quarter, ma’am…”

Her tone sharpened.

“No. This is a strategic zone. If the primary server goes down, the entire grid will go blind.”

Vedant finally spoke.

“The backup system will be included in this phase. We’ll adjust the cost.”

Mahi glanced at him.

The meeting stayed intense.

After standing for nearly two hours, Mahi slowed down slightly.

Vedant stepped beside her.

“Take a break.”

“I’m fine.”

“That’s an order.”

She removed her helmet and sat under the shade.

He handed her a bottle.

“Water.”

There was less authority in his voice now… more concern.

Back at the hotel.

The entire day passed in meetings, contractor calls, and approvals.

By 8:15 PM, Mahi entered the room.

She stopped.

A small chocolate cake was placed on the table.

Beside it—a gift box.

“Vedant…?”

The bathroom door opened.

He stepped out, dressed simply.

“We got late,” he said casually.

Mahi looked at the cake.

“You did this…?”

“The midnight wish felt incomplete without it.”

She walked closer.

“Should I blow the candle?”

He gave a slight nod.

“Make a wish first.”

She looked at him.

“I already got it.”

For a second, his expression shifted… then returned to normal.

She blew the candle.

Vedant clapped softly.

“Happy Birthday to you… happy birthday, dear Mahi.”

She cut a small piece of cake and held it toward him.

“You.”

He hesitated… then took a bite.

The next second, he held a piece near her lips.

“Complete the formalities, Mahi.”

She smiled and took a bite.

After that, he handed her the gift box.

Mahi opened it.

Inside was an expensive, professional painting color set—an imported brand.

She looked genuinely surprised.

“Vedant… this…”

“What better gift for a painting artist than colors?”

She smiled softly.

“Thank you… for everything.”

She sat on the couch, gently running her fingers over the colors.

Vedant extended his hand toward her.

“May I have this dance?”

She looked at him… then placed her hand in his.

Soft music played.

Her hand rested on his shoulder.

His hand settled lightly at her back.

They moved slowly… quietly… together.

And just like that—

the night passed.

“Has someone ever made you feel this quietly special… without ever saying ‘I love you’?” 🖤✨

If yes… tell me your story in the 💬 comments…

And if not… then tell me — do you think Mahi understands what Vedant feels for her? 👀
