Vedant had already reached the office at his usual time—perfectly dressed, calm, and completely composed. The moment he stepped into his cabin, everything fell into its usual order. Files were arranged neatly, his laptop opened, and without wasting a second, he immersed himself in work.
A soft knock broke the silence.
“Come in.”
Mahi walked in, holding a few files in her hands—urgent approvals, it seemed. She stepped up to his desk and placed them in front of him. Vedant didn’t look up, his eyes still fixed on the screen.
“Please sign these. Final drafts,” she said.
He responded with a simple, distracted, “Hmm.”
Mahi turned to leave, but before she could take another step—
“Mahi. One minute.”
She stopped. Turning back, she saw that Vedant was already on his feet. He walked toward her, his gaze now focused.
“Show me your hand.”
She frowned slightly, confused. “What?”
Without waiting, Vedant gently took her right hand in his. There was a small cut near her finger… a faint line of red still visible.
Mahi glanced at it casually. “Oh.”
But Vedant’s expression changed instantly. Concern flickered across his face.
“How did this happen?”
Before she could respond, he guided her to the sofa. “Sit down, Mahi.”
He quickly pulled out the first aid box from his drawer, took some cotton, applied antiseptic, and began cleaning the wound with careful precision—as if even the slightest pressure might hurt her.
Mahi just watched him quietly.
“I don’t know… maybe a paper pin,” she said softly.
Vedant’s voice turned slightly serious. “Why don’t you ever take care of yourself?”
Mahi smiled faintly. “Maybe because… I have enough people who take care of me.”
He didn’t look at her. Just changed the cotton and asked, almost too casually, “Like?”
“Like Vani… my brother…” she replied.
“And?” he asked, his tone still controlled.
Mahi paused for a second. She was about to say his name.
Vedant finally looked up. “And?”
But she looked away instead. “Dad.”
His expression went completely neutral again. He reached for the bandage.
“Are you sure… there’s no one else?”
Mahi looked at him this time, a small, mischievous smile playing on her lips.
“Actually… there is one more person.”
Vedant’s hand stilled for a brief second. “Who?”
“Mom.”
He finished wrapping the bandage neatly. “Done.”
Then he let go of her hand. “Take care.”
Just like that, his tone shifted back—professional, distant.
Mahi stood up. “Thank you.”
He only nodded. “You can go now.”
She took a couple of steps, then paused. Turning back, she looked at him.
Vedant was already seated at his desk again, eyes on the screen, as if nothing had happened. But the tightness in his jaw… it was impossible to miss.
Mahi quietly walked out of the cabin.
Inside, Vedant closed his eyes for a brief moment.
“Mom…”
He whispered it under his breath—then opened his eyes and returned to work, burying everything exactly where it belonged.
